Buying Bread in France
By Kim Steele of Easy French Food
If you are traveling in France be sure not to miss out on the fabulous selection of French breads and viennoiserie (those are pastries like croissants and pain chocolates)offered by a quality boulangerie. How to recognize a quality boulangerie? First off, don't buy bread in a grocery store. I believe most times the dough isn't even made on site. The result is a very disappointing baguette and for anyone that has tasted better the croissants are disgusting. So skip the Cora, Super U, Leader Price, etc. OK? Look for the line. Where there are people lined up to get their baguette you are likely to find quality bread Look for the line to form early in morning, just before noon, and after work (about 6 pm). You can always come back a little later when the line has dwindled. For the very best taste experience, buy what just came out of the oven. Look behind the salesclerk to see if there's anything on the racks of trays that are cooling. A just warm from the oven croissant or baguette is reason to live. Enjoy!
